How to use the Categories and Tags converter in WordPress

The Category and Tags Converter in WordPress allows you to easily convert categories into tags or tags into categories. This can be helpful if you want to reorganize your taxonomy structure or make changes to how you classify your content. Here's how you can use the Category and Tags Converter:

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard using your admin credentials.

  2. Once you're logged in, navigate to the "Tools" section on the left-hand side of the dashboard menu and click on "Import."

  3. On the Import page, you'll see a list of available import tools. Look for "Categories and Tags Converter" and click on the "Run Importer" link below it.

  4. The Category and Tags Converter tool will open, displaying two options: "Convert Categories to Tags" and "Convert Tags to Categories."

  5. Convert Categories to Tags: If you want to convert categories into tags, click on the "Convert Categories to Tags" option. You'll see a list of your existing categories.

    • Select the categories you want to convert into tags by checking the checkboxes next to them.
    • Click on the "Convert Categories to Tags" button to initiate the conversion process.
  6. Convert Tags to Categories: If you want to convert tags into categories, click on the "Convert Tags to Categories" option. You'll see a list of your existing tags.

    • Select the tags you want to convert into categories by checking the checkboxes next to them.
    • Click on the "Convert Tags to Categories" button to start the conversion process.
  7. After initiating the conversion, WordPress will perform the necessary actions to convert the selected categories into tags or tags into categories.

  8. Once the conversion is complete, you'll see a confirmation message indicating the number of categories or tags that were converted. You can then go to the respective "Categories" or "Tags" sections to review and manage the changes.

Please note that the Category and Tags Converter tool is part of the core WordPress software, but its availability might depend on your version of WordPress. Additionally, it's always recommended to review and double-check the results after using the converter to ensure that your taxonomy structure aligns with your content organization goals.

Make sure to create a backup of your WordPress site before performing any major changes to your categories or tags to mitigate any potential data loss or unintended consequences.
